To understand where a user's data is stored by Spotlight.
Most data you use in Spotlight is actually stored on one of your company's connected database or datawarehouse systems. Spotlight brokers live connections to this data when you interact with a datset in Spotlight or make a query to Spotlight from an external BI tool like Tableau, Jupyter, or Power BI. The only data actually stored in Spotlight are cached versions of datasets (when users actively enable caching) and files users have directly uploaded (CSV, JSON, Parquet, or XLS/XLSX/XLSB).
Cached and uploaded data is stored encrypted in Amazon Simple Storage Service, commonly known as S3.
Spotlight also stores metadata about datasets and all other assets in Spotlight (Connections, Documents, and Workspaces). This metadata is stored in an encrypted Mongo DB and backed up to the same encrypted S3.
